Position: President

The Southwest Minority Supplier Development Council (SMSDC), is one of the largest and prestigious organizations for increasing business opportunities between major buying organizations and minority-owned businesses. Formed in 1999 as a regional office of the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), SMSDC provides vendor certification for minority-owned businesses, buyer-seller referrals, and numerous programs and benefits for its corporate and entrepreneurial members.

SMSDC is a Texas nonprofit corporation and is an affiliate of the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), a national network of 37 regional business development councils in most major U.S. cities. SMSDC is committed to leveling the playing field by creating links to progressive business opportunities. The SMSDC covers the cities of Austin, San Antonio, El Paso, and Midland/Odessa as well as border regions.

Location:
Austin or San Antonio, Texas

Basic Function:
The President is responsible for the day-to-day management of SMSDC including staff and fiscal management, program development and implementation. Working closely with the Board of Directors, the membership and the central and southwestern Texas business community, the President leads the execution of the organization’s vision and objectives. Additionally, the President spearheads the work and program coordination required for affiliation with the NMSDC.

Reporting Relationship
The President reports to the Board of SMSDC. He/She will ensure compliance with the council’s mission and maintain prudent financial management practices of all funds and resources. The President manages a staff.

Major Responsibiliies:
The President is responsible for determining and formulating policies to provide overall direction of Council operations and activities within the guidelines established by the Board of Directors. Major responsibilities of the President include creating and leading the execution of the organization’s vision and strategy and keeping the Board of Directors apprised of the organization’s progress against its goals.

  Specifically, the President will:

  • Prepare and administer the annual budget, with the Board of Directors’ approval. He/she also oversees proper recourse alignment and leads initiatives that ensure that the council’s mission and goals are met
  • Develop and administer policies and controls to ensure the organization is fiscally responsible.
  • Develop and implement annual and long-term goals and objectives with input from and the approval of the Board of Directors.
  • Plan, direct and coordinate operational activities at the highest level of management with the help of council staff.
  • Raise capital to adequately fund SMSDC objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with Standards of Affiliation established by the National Minority Supplier Development Council.
  • Serve as SMSDC’s principal spokesperson on issues impacting the minority business community.
  • Establish and strengthen relationships with corporations, business and community leaders and other organizations that can further the mission of SMSDC.
  • Recruit and retain corporate members and certified minority business members.
  • Develop strategy for creating and increasing business opportunities for certified minority businesses.
  • Assist buying organizations in meeting their supplier diversity program objectives, including program design and implementation, and minority business sourcing and development.
  • Develop and implement programs that identify, recruit, train and promote minority-owned businesses.
  • Collect and maintain data on minority vendors located in SMSDC’s geographical service area.
  • Serve as staff liaison between SMSDC and NMSDC.
  • Communicate opportunities to minority businesses and business assistance groups.
  • Develop and implement community and media relations strategies for SMSDC.
  • Provide staff support to the Board of Directors, Executive Committee and other committees as directed
  • Recruit, manage, motivate and lead staff to deliver all necessary services. The President will provide staff training as well as develop and execute staff development plans.
  • Perform other related duties as directed by the Chairperson, Vice-Chairpersons and Board of Directors

Experience:
The ideal candidate will possess at least 10 years of solid management and leadership experience (organizational, fiscal and human resources) with a corporation and/or a business-related nonprofit organization. The person we seek may also have experience as an entrepreneur.

The President will possess competencies in strategic thinking, operational management, and have strong business acumen. Additionally, he/she will have a proven record in several or all of the following areas: development and implementation of minority business development programs; community economic development; marketing and relationship-building with diverse groups; financial management; funding; program development and implementation; work with minority businesses; and, work with major buying organizations.

Knowledge of nonprofit organization policy-making and funding is highly desired.

Education:
A bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree is highly desirable.

Personal Characteristics:
The ideal candidate will possess exceptional leadership and relationship-building skills, with the ability to interact comfortably and effectively with a broad range of individuals, including the SMSDC’s diverse corporate and business owner members, CEOs, and the service area business community. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated understanding of entrepreneurial frameworks, particularly focused on minority business ownership. He/She should be “hands-on,” and display passion regarding building diverse businesses and communities and be attracted to the challenge of balancing the administrative and funding aspects of the position’s duties.

Additionally, the successful candidate will be a visionary with the ability and the desire to lead the organization to the next level. He/She will have exceptional written and verbal communication skills and be an effective public speaker. The ideal candidate will be action-oriented, innovative and comfortable working in an environment that calls for a great deal of commitment, political savvy and the ability to manage with minimal supervision.

Summary:
The President will play an integral role in the continued success and development of SMSDC. Through his/her dedication and talents, the organization will build effective relationships with buying organizations, minority businesses, funding sources and the service area business community.
